Cowes Week

Some news for you. A very successful Cowes Week Tournament has finished, with the finals taking place last Thursday and Friday. A little bit of rain fell during the week but this did not stop the bowls taking place and many thanks/plaudits were given to everyone who has looked after the green, surrounds and clubhouse over the last few months, especially to Brian Blenkinsop who has co-ordinated all the work. We won’t spend too much time on the ‘wrong-bias’ bowls sent down by a few of our bowlers, who shall remain nameless, Rob (oops!)

We have got six touring games left – one on Wednesday and five in September, but we still need more players to put your names down. These games help us to raise funds AND KEEP SUBSCRIPTIONS DOWN

so please don’t leave it to others to play, help out too. Also, at the moment, there are no volunteers to help to do the teas/coffees for the games.

Good luck to Steve Lewis, Rog Payne and Ray Byham, who are off to Leamington Spa to play in the National Triples Finals this week. Let’s hope that they can have success. You can look at the up to date results on the Bowls England website.

Everything is ready for our own tour to Eastbourne on 6 September, thanks to Steve Morris & Mark Baker. Fred Sly is busy getting his money-box prepared for all the fines that he gives out each evening but he is very worried that funds will go down greatly because Jackie New is unable to go this year. Still, the cygnets on the Arundel River will be safe from the gale-force winds!

Our AGM is on Tuesday 1 October at 7.30pm at the IOW Community Club. Forms will be on the notice-board soon for you to propose names for the various positions on the committee and also for you to make any proposals for changes to our rules/constitution. More details to follow.

Finally, Graham Thorne has asked me to remind you to return your raffle card, which he gave you at the beginning of the season  as the draw will be at our AGM. These can be given to your team captain or to Graham. It doesn’t matter if you cannot fill the card – any amount will help to boost our funds.

Ladies Report

Friday 2nd August we played Sandown at home, unfortunately the game didn’t go our way, it was all down to the last end to get some points.we lost an important 6 points.

Wednesday the 7th August we played Newport away on their green. It was a lovely sunny day but very windy. Liz, Chris, Sandra, and Marion put on a strong fight back but but lost by a couple of shots, Carole,Hazel, Cat, and Jacqui won their game by a few, so overall we won by 9 shots 4 points. 2 husbands, 1 team member, 1 daughter, and 3 grandchildren came to support.

And we all went home not ecstatic, but happy.

C and D Team Report

Playing in any competitive Sport the main aim is to win, but if results go against you, try to be positive, at least enjoy playing. This is now the C Teams third consecutive season of playing in Division 2 and each season we have improved our position in the Division through this philosophy.

It is sad to report that one of the Teams stalwarts – Dave Dawson has had to stand down possibly for the rest of the season through injury, but on a brighter note Pat Barsdell has returned to the squad having had a successful hip operation.

The D Team which plays in the mid week Afternoon League are holding their own in Division 1 having been promoted last season. The aim of the D Team is to give priority to members who are not in the C Team. The Harris Cup Semi Final is at home on Friday 23rd August 2pm against Plessey G.

I would like to thank Brian Blenkinsop for not only his efforts in recruiting Players but also for helping to improve their play through coaching.

A thank you for all Members who have helped both Teams with the Teas.

I wish Tom Boyer (self selected B Team player) a happy holiday, this will give me time to regain my sanity, the Team will know what I mean.

A full report of the season will be at our AGM.

County Triples – Steve, Roger and Ray

Steve Lewis, Roger Payne & Ray Byham, who played in the final of the men’s Triples County Competition last Sunday. After being quite a way behind initially, the team fought back to come within two shots going into the last end. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get the shots back and went down to a very strong Plessey team.  However, Steve, Rog and Ray are going to Leamington Spa in August to represent the club and county in the National Finals We wish them all the very best and hope that they do well.
