I hope you have all recovered from Last Night’s nerve-jangling England Match & I wonder how many people all over the Country have phoned into work sick today after celebrating?!
Another busy week of Bowls is over (but at least we have played in good weather) and another hectic one to come in both League and Cup games for all our teams. Yesterday we hosted a Touring Team from Yately BC. It was a close game, which we eventually won 96-82 but with a few funny incidents along the way. Jenny arrived and tried to put her hand in her pocket to discover that she had put her trousers on the wrong way round – she didn’t know whether she was coming or going (Sorry – very corny!) She was so rattled by this that she then forgot to put David Dawson’s raffle ticket stubs in the box or perhaps she was still thinking of the invitation to a tour to the loft with him! Tony was late arriving and bowled a wrong bias, David woudn’t bowl his last wood on one of the early ends because it was close (in a touring game?!) I am sure that ther £1 donation to the charity box will be given soon.
Thanks to everyone who took part; to Alan for stepping up as Captain of the Day, to John & Pat for ensuring the fridge was stocked up, to Jackie & Sue for the teas, to Pat, Sandra & Jenny for the raffle and to everyone who once again donated prizes, and to Rob, who was down early again to set out all the equipment. Also, a special thank you to Chris for filling in and especially to Mike Hannam, who volunteered to come down as a reserve just in case. We made £190 on drinks, £90 from the raffle & £96 in rink fees – another very successful day.
Talking about success, many congratulations to Sharon Hartill who won her National Semi-Final of the Champion of Champions against Andrea Symanns (Plessey) and now plays Annie Morris (Shanklin) in the Regional Final. Also, congratulations to Steve Lewis, Rog Payne, Dave Gustar & Ray Byham who won their County Comps Fours Semi-Final at Sandown and are now in the Final. Well done, too, to Sharon & Laraine, who reached the Semi-Finals of the Ladies Two-Wood Singles County Comps yesterday, but were unfortunately beaten in that round, as well as to Roz who managed to reach the Quarter-Finals before losing.
Yesterday, Steve Morris, Paul Green, Mark Baker & Pete Furmidge represented the club at the BIOW Men’s President’s Challenge Cup which they won – congratulations!
Some more exciting cup games coming up this week. On Tuesday evening, the Men’s B Team play Ryde Marina A at home in the Guy Cup then on Friday evening they play Shanklin E at home in the Ridett Cup. On Sunday at 4pm, the Men’s A Team play Shanklin A at home in the Regional Final of the National Top Club. Pete is also still trying to arrange a date for the Final of the Two Fours against Shanklin A (who won the National Final last season).
Finally, a reminder. Yesterday was the official deadline for entries for the Cowes Week Open Tournament (28 July – 2 August) but it might be worth you phoning Brian Blenkinsop if you have forgotten – he might be lenient and allow you to enter if you are quick!
Enjoy your bowls this week.
