Thanks to everyone for attending the event and to Emma from Clubhouse Catering, Roband the Ladies who organised the Raffle, which raised £141, due to members’ generosity.
A bit of History of the last 50 years (from reading previous years’ minutes!) An EGM was held on 22 Dec 1974 to decide that JS Whites Bowling Club (who played at what is now the IOW Community Club) would be unfortunately wound up as the ground was to be sold off by the company – proposed by Chairman (Mr LA Corke) and seconded by Mr J Barker. The minutes mention (Vice Captain at that time) Pete Dunstan – but also Mr Roger Hendey – a founder member of the club.
The vote agreed to continue and to change its name to become Cowes Medina Bowling Club, initially playing all games away from home as we didn’t have a home green.
In 1975 the club moved to play at Northwood Park, sharing with Cowes BC, then a Ladies team was formed shortly afterwards.
In 2010 Cowes BC folded and many joined Cowes Medina, which profited from their players to make the club even stronger.
Some other long-serving members were mentioned through the years of minutes and we are delighted to see them here at the celebration and which demonstrates their commitment to our club still: Roger Hendey, Peter Furmidge, Chris New, Ian Thomas, Tony Augustus, Brian Blenkinsop. Also, Fred Rylands (treasurer) who has passed away but his wife, Margaret, is here and still a big part of our club.
We may only be a small club but with many successes:
Many Men’s and Ladies’ County Comps winners at Worthing and Leamington;
National Triples Finalists at Worthing 1996 (Peter Furmidge, Chris New and Pete Dunstan)
National Men’s Two Fours Runners-up in 2001
Winners of Men’s Division 1 title over 30 times
Many winners of Men’s and Ladies Leagues and Cups
England Players (Darren Griffith & Adam Clarke)
Regular representatives in Middleton Cup and Johns Trophy Teams
This demonstrates what we can do when we all work together.
Finally, some trivia items from the minutes:
1. (AGM 1975) members asked to contribute 10p each for the hire of the room.
2. (AGM 1977) profit from teas was £9.20 – agreed that half to be given to ladies’ section for all their hard work.
3. (2012) application to the town council for £400 for half the cost of a new shed [Tony Augustus secretary], which is still proudly standing next to the clubhouse!
