Unfortunately, it wasn’t a very successful day today, beginning with yet another failed attempt by Graham to make a cup of tea for Merv. Perfect boiling water, just the right amount of milk, but when Merv stirred it he realised that there was no teabag in it!
The planned ‘Open Crazy Golf Championship’ for this morning did not go ahead, due to the heavy rain but also because of the controversial result last year when there were two people finishing on equal scores and some obscure golf rule brought in by someone (who shall remain nameless, Netty) so that she won. But I don’t hold grudges as you know! Some people went for a wander, some used the indoor swimming pool at the hotel and others just chilled.
Although the heavy rain continued, we decided to go to our game at Bournemouth Electric to see whether we could play. However, when we got there, the general feeling from both teams was not to go out, so we stayed in the social club and ate their food and help their bar profits. The rain did eventually stop at 3.30ish but by then many of their team had left and our driver had been contacted to pick us up at 4pm. It was disappointing though it couldn’t be helped, but we are determined to play at Lymington tomorrow as long as the green is playable, whatever the weather. Andrew was very good again, raising our spirits with his jokes and just needed a call to come and pick us up at any time.
A major concern is that during the afternoon, Fred had handed over the fines book to Mick Scott to write down any misdemeanours. What wasn’t expected was the absolute enjoyment and relish in which Mick took on this role and many names were put in the book. He can go back on his Daish’s Tours in future if he carries on like this! He claims that he was serving an apprenticeship for the position but that didn’t help his cause.
The evening started very well with a drinks reception laid on by IOW Tours at 7pm followed by another excellent evening meal. As I had said all my thank-yous at the earlier drinks, Fred was able to tear into us after the meal with his fines, starting with everyone, who had not been fined yet, having to pay up something for not having been fined already! The target is to raise over £200 to be given to the Cowes Foodbank but we have to wait until tomorrow for the result from Chris & Fred.
Most people went to the bar after the meal to watch England beat Japan in the Rugby World Cup, but there were some of our group who were cheering for Japan and singing some Welsh song. An outbreak of ‘Sweet Chariot’ soon quietened them though! Others went to listen to the (alleged) singer in the function room next door, but thankfully the barman kept shutting the door to keep us from hearing her rendition of the songs.
